Difficult Conversations: How to Communicate Across Difference – Thurs. Sept. 1, 12-2pm
Have you ever engaged in a conversation about an uncomfortable or sensitive topic and didn't know how to approach it? Conversations about sensitive topics can go awry and lead to frustration and alienation, but this does not need to be the case. In this 2-hour workshop participants will be provided with strategies for engaging in conversations that may be uncomfortable or challenging. The latter part of this program provides participants with an opportunity to apply what they have learned in a breakout room activity. Participants will need access to a webcam and mic to engage in the latter part of the session. Please note: this workshop will not be recorded. Register here.
How Implicit Associations Can Thwart Equitable Hiring Decisions – Tues. Sept. 6, 3-4:30pm
Associations are mental shortcuts our brains develop to connect ideas or things and reduce processing time. While not inherently bad, associations can manifest in the form of implicit, or unconscious, bias. When left unmitigated, implicit bias can influence the way we treat others, including our perception of candidates during the hiring process. In this 90-min workshop we will explore the features of implicit bias, how it is formed, and the impact it can have on the evaluation of candidates in the hiring process. Strategies for mitigating the impact of bias in the hiring process will be outlined. Register here.
Wikipedia Editing for Knowledge Equity – Thurs. Sept. 15, 12-1:15pm
In this fourth installment of the CFAES 2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Speaker Series Dr. Alexandria Lockett, Assistant Professor of English at Spelman College, will discuss how Wikipedia represents historical and contemporary politics of knowledge production. She will address how Wikipedia editing among culturally diverse editors has the potential to both cultivate the development of transferable skills and fill major knowledge gaps, in terms of race and gender, across disciplinary, geographic, and institutional contexts.
