Vacation is a time to unwind, celebrate, rejuvenate…a time to see new places, and try new things! OSU Extension Partners with BroadbandOhio’s Community Accelerator Program

In mid-June, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor John Husted, and Broadband Ohio announced that four teams will make up the first cohort of the BroadbandOhio Community Accelerator. This is a new program to help local communities plan and build capacity to improve their broadband infrastructure and access.

More than $232 million in grants authorized by the Broadband Expansion Authority ultimately will help improve broadband internet service for about 230,000 Ohio residents in numerous counties.

Teams from Defiance, Shelby and Tuscarawas counties, as well as the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission, will participate in a 15-week webinar class to help them learn how to identify broadband goals, access resources, and create a local strategic plan that can make the most of upcoming federal and state funding opportunities.

The BroadbandOhio Community Accelerator program is a collaborative effort between BroadbandOhio, Heartland Forward, the Benton Institute for Broadband & Society, and Ohio State University Extension. Several OSU Extension community development educators will assist with this program.

Remote Software Access for Students and Instructors Coming August 2022

Beginning in August 2022, all students and instructors at the university will have access to Virtual Desktop by either logging in to apps.osu.edu, or installing the Citrix Workspace client to access advanced features. All available Virtual Desktop software (like SAS, SPSS, M365, OneDrive, and the Adobe Cloud) applications can be used from any device and any location that has internet access. This access will enable extended use of many commonly used applications for students outside of physical lab spaces, and allows instructors to provide the same coursework for both in-person and remote learning. Simply log in, open the software you need such as SPSS or Minitab, and begin your work.  Stay tuned for more information as the launch date approaches.

DEI Programming Interests Assessment

The CFAES Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is seeking feedback from all CFAES faculty, staff, and students to assess workshop, webinar, and other programming participation and interests. We want to hear from everyone, regardless of past participation in DEI programs. Pelotonia, the annual bike ride to raise money for cancer research is fast approaching - August 5-7. Our CFAES team just passed the $3,000 fundraising mark – will you help us get to $3,500 before ride weekend? Donate today! Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the ride routes in Columbus, New Albany, and Gambier, OH. How To Get A Healthy Tomato Crop This Season

Tomatoes are a taste of summer that we all look forward to. We have had a challenging year so far for sure. A cooler wet spring has given way to some serious heat going forward. Advocates & Allies for Equity Virtual Workshop

Attend this Ally workshop and help create a more inclusive and equitable culture for women-identified colleagues and minoritized groups at Ohio State. Man-identified campus leaders, called Advocates, will lead a virtual Ally workshop on July 14, noon - 1:30pm. Man-identified participants* will learn about gender bias, evidence-based strategies to interrupt it, and ways to contribute to positive changes on Ohio State's campuses. This NSF-supported approach facilitated by The Women's Place helps create an environment where all can thrive and make their full contributions. Learn more and register.

Coffee With the Franklin County Master Gardeners

Would you like to learn how to attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden? Does creating a food forest in your backyard sound tasty?  If so, plan to learn about these and other backyard gardening topics while sipping coffee at a Coffee With the Master Gardeners workshop. Workshops will be held from 8:00 am to 10:00 am one Saturday each month throughout the growing season at the Franklin County Office of OSU Extension on Waterman. Most of the workshops will include a hands-on component outdoors in the Master Gardener Volunteer Learning Gardens. Gardeners can register for any of the workshops for just $15 by visiting go.osu.edu/coffeeMGV.

Coffee With the Master Gardeners Workshops will be held as follows:

SAEA Conference Registration Now Open - July 21-24

Registration is open for the Sustainable Agriculture Education Association 2022 National Conference, hosted on the campuses of the 1862 and 1890 Ohio land grant institutions, Ohio State and Central State Universities. This in-person conference will offer attendees field trips that showcase unique historical and present-day innovations in sustainable agriculture education and practice, and conference programming on both hosting university campuses (see currently planned agenda here). Virtual registration for the academic conference sessions is also available for those who cannot attend in person, but you won't want to miss it!
