Gardening for Your Health
Gardening can be more than just a hobby, it can have lasting benefits for your physical health, mental health, and can help fight against some chronic diseases and cancers. In a randomized, controlled study of community gardeners, those who gardened increased their physical activity by forty-two minutes per week and ate an average of 1.4 grams more fiber daily than those who did not. They also reported lower levels of stress and anxiety. Learn more about how gardening can benefit your health.

Move More Month
Being active improves your well-being. Whether by participating in an exercise class or finding a few minutes to move your body, prioritize physical activity. Even 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per day helps reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors. Organize a group walk, take a bike ride or stretch throughout your work day. Report = Support Training Completion Update

As of April 25, the college is at 88.46% overall completion for faculty, staff, and student employees. This year, merit-eligible employees who do not complete Report=Support! by April 28, 2023, will not be eligible for annual merit increases that take effect September 2023. Complete your training today!

Urgent: Update your iPads, iPhones and Mac devices

The Office of Technology and Digital Innovation recommends updating your iPhones, iPads and Mac devices to their most current supported versions. This urgent update is being recommended as a security precaution after Apple discovered a vulnerability in previous versions.

Complete the Institutional Data Policy (IDP) Awareness Activity by April 28

Remember to complete the Institutional Data Policy (IDP) awareness activity by April 28. This short activity will teach you about the university’s institutional data and what you can do to protect it.  

Columbus Campus Faculty and Staff Parking Permit Upgrade/Downgrade Program

The annual Columbus campus faculty and staff parking permit upgrade/downgrade program for the 2023-24 permit year runs May 1 to May 31. The upgrade/downgrade program is available for employees who are interested in purchasing permits outside of their job family. Parking permit eligibility is based on job family, such as Classified Civil Service (CCS) and unclassified Administrative and Professional (A&P). Your eligible permit options are displayed when you log into the CampusParc website using your Ohio State credentials. If your job family changed since you last purchased a permit, you may see different permit options. Look up your job family in Workday by selecting View Profile.

You're Invited to "We Grow Scientists"

CFAES will host their inaugural “We Grow Scientists” event on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, from 3:00-7:00 PM at Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory. This afternoon of hands-on learning, wagon tours, and activities will showcase the many STEM fields CFAES has to offer and will include a look at the Waterman facilities such as the newly constructed Controlled Environment Agriculture Research Complex (CEARC). “We Grow Scientists” is a free event open to learners of all ages looking to learn more about STEM in their community as part of the COSI Science Festival (May 3-6, 2023).

Can you believe it is almost summer? The summer vegetable garden means tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, green beans and more. Growing Franklin will be partnering with The Nature Conservancy for a webinar May 3 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the tips and tricks needed to maximize your healthy summer harvest. The class is free and open to the public but does require registration. Bring your friends and your questions.

Learn Kitchen Science this Summer at Ohio State

The Buckeye Precollege Summer Exploration program offers a one-week, non-residential enrichment course in Kitchen Science for high school (grades 9-11) students on the Ohio State Columbus campus July 10-14, 2023. Designed for self-motivated learners, class meets 9am - 4pm daily. Applications are open through May 1 and reviewed in the order received - apply now!

Spring Plant Sale and Auction Fundraiser

Visitors can peruse a selection of 16,000 new, unusual, and tried and true edible and ornamental plants, participate in tree and shrub auctions, visit vendor booths, enjoy food trucks, and even have their garden tools sharpened while they shop! Registration for Pelotonia 2023 is open! Join OSU Team Buckeye: CFAES Sustains Life

This year marks the 15th anniversary of Pelotonia – a bike ride to raise money for cancer research at Ohio State. Join co-captains Kayla Arnold and Gary Pierzynski on the CFAES Sustains Life Pelotonia team. This is Kayla’s 10th year volunteering and will be Gary’s 3rd year riding in the event. There are many ways to participate including volunteering, sponsoring a rider, or biking. There will even be a new gravel ride this year for those who enjoy off-road routes. Join in on the fun! 

To register for the CFAES Sustains Life team, go to the Pelotonia website and click on the desired registration. If you have registered previously with Pelotonia, you may need to reset your password using the “Forgot password” link the first time you log in. To request to join our Peloton, you can search for it during the registration process (CFAES Sustains Life) or under “Edit Profile” from your account homepage. If you have trouble finding the team, after you finish registration simply send your public ID directly to Kayla Arnold who can manually add you to the Peloton.

All proceeds from Pelotonia are donated to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (The James). To date, Pelotonia has raised nearly $261 million for cancer research.
