Fund Your Healthy Habits with Lifestyle Spending Account
To support health and well-being, Ohio State offers eligible employees the option of using a Lifestyle Spending Account (LSA) to reimburse personal expenses related to health, fitness, family, emotional and social wellness. This benefit reimburses you up to $125 quarterly (a total of $500 per year) for eligible well-being purchases and services. Complete IDP Training or Awareness Activity

We all share the important responsibility of protecting Ohio State’s institutional data. In order to best protect our data, the university expects all employees without access to protected health information to complete a BuckleyeLearn training or an awareness activity in the Cybersecurity for You (C4U) awareness platform about the Institutional Data Policy (IDP) by April 28. Those who have to take the training in BuckeyeLearn (i.e., employees with access to restricted (S4) data) will see it already assigned on their transcript. Those who do not have this assignment should take the C4U awareness activity by visiting here.

Agricultural Guestworkers in Ohio: What We Know and Where We’re Going

Join OSU Extension and the Ohio Commission on Hispanic and Latino Affairs (OCHLA) to learn more about agricultural guestworkers in Ohio. Each year, OCHLA publishes Latino Community Reports designed to educate and facilitate discussion on particular challenges and opportunities facing Hispanic Ohioans. This season’s publication focuses on the H-2A guestworker population in Ohio. Anisa Kline, PhD candidate in the Dept. of Geography at OSU and author of the report, will present original research results from her survey of 285 H-2A workers statewide, and stakeholders from across sectors will respond to her findings.

This Thursday at noon CFAES will be kicking off our DEI speaker series with Courtney Johnson from the Office of Institutional Equity. Courtney will provide a first-hand account of an issue that affects many people in our community, including students, and can create significant obstacles to getting jobs and other opportunities. It is a highly stigmatized topic and differentially affects people across social identity groups. Courtney will be talking about her experience getting a DUI and being incarcerated. Her voice isn’t one we hear often because of stigma, stereotypes, and the differential impacts of social identity on the ability to respond to such a crisis. Although Courtney routinely speaks publicly about her experience, she has requested that the event not be recorded. Workshop: Exploding Myths about Transgender and Nonbinary people

Although transgender and non-binary people have gained significant visibility over the past decade, numerous misconceptions and stereotypes still exist and create environments that are unwelcoming or even hostile to people with gender identities that fall outside of cisnormativity (i.e., the belief that being cisgender, or not transgender, is the “normal” and “correct” way of being). Beliefs rooted in long-held myths about people who have for centuries defied conventional gender norms must be challenged and replaced in order to create environments that are inclusive of all genders, not just those who are cisgender. In this 90-minute workshop we will cover basic terminology and differentiate identities related to gender and sex that frequently get confused. We will address several common myths and misconceptions about transgender and non-binary people and identify strategies for creating welcoming and inclusive environments for people of all genders, including those who challenge cisnormative expectations. Ways that cisgender people can serve as allies to transgender and non-binary people will be identified. This program is a collaboration with the Wexner Medical Center Diversity Council.

2023 CFAES Student Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2023 CFAES Student Awards. The categories of awards include: CFAES Student Awards, CFAES Service to Students Awards, and CFAES Student Organization Awards. Nominations are due February 15, 2023. 

USAC seeking new members to fill the 2023-2026, 3-year term

Staff (CCS, A&P, Sr A&P) are invited to join the University Staff Advisory Committee (USAC), an advisory body to university senior leadership. The application window for the USAC 2023-2026 term will be open February 1-26, 2023.

Love Data Week Map-a-Thon: February 17

Join us for the first Love Data Week Map-a-Thon to learn more about how geospatial data support humanitarian aid and sustainable development and how to create data for an open mapping project managed by the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT). We welcome mappers from any discipline or skill level, and no prior experience with OpenStreetMap is necessary. Participants are required to bring their own laptop for the map-a-thon, and past mappers have indicated that data editing in OpenStreetMap is easier with a mouse than with a touchpad.

Foundational Leadership Certificate

NEW CO-HORT BEGINS FEBRUARY 2023
The OSU Leadership Center wants to help you develop the skills needed to be a high performing leader through gaining the Foundational Leadership Certificate.

High performing leaders are essential to the success of an organization. A high performing leader has a keen self-awareness, the ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment, and can build, strengthen, and gain optimal performance from teams.

The Foundational Leadership Certificate allows you the opportunity to further your education, personally develop, create relationships with other industry professionals, and grow as a leader within the workplace. This will express your dedication to professional development and exhibit your efforts of creating an efficient and productive environment. 

Criteria to successfully earn the Foundational Leadership Certificate include workshops, individual coaching, and a personal leadership analysis.

An orientation for this cohort is scheduled for 9:00 am on February 22.

Spend the evening with Ohio State’s Stone Laboratory and the Olentangy River Wetlands

The 2023 Evening with Stone Laboratory and Olentangy River Wetlands Winter Program will take place on February 28, 2023, at the Longaberger Alumni House on Ohio State University’s Columbus campus in the Sanders Grand Lounge, 2200 Olentangy River Road, Columbus.  

Attendees will hear short presentations from Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory; the Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park; the Friends of Stone Lab; and a student participant in Stone Lab’s Research Experience for Undergraduates Fellowship Program. Space is limited, RSVP required.

2023 Warner Grant RFP Released

Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Warner On-Farm Research Grant program, which is administered by the Agroecosystem Management Program (AMP) in CFAES. See RFP and application materials here.

The Warner grants are funded from an endowment created by Paul C. and Edna H. Warner, and provide up to $5,000 to support collaborative on-farm research that advance sustainable agriculture. Applicants need to include at least 1 farmer and 1 OSU researcher or extension educator. Typically 1-3 grants are awarded per year based on endowment income and requests.

Submit a proposal for an Engagement Grant

The Office of Outreach and Engagement is seeking proposals from faculty, and/or faculty-led teams and university staff that hold PI status, for the 2023 Engagement Grants. Grants will be awarded at a maximum amount of $20,000 to support development of impact reports for programs, performances or exhibits; development of a public policy document or impact report; development or implementation of a program, performance, exhibition or initiative based upon previous research, assessment or public input; or enhancement or expansion of a program that extends community access to the university. Proposals are due March 6.

Changing Rivers, Flooding and Warmer Temperatures Focus of Upcoming Breakfast Program

Join the Environmental Professionals Network on March 7 for “Changing Rivers: Enhancing the natural and social wellbeing of Ohio alongside more floods and warmer temperatures.” The program explores stormwater management and regional extreme rainfall events – connecting these changes to empirical research on the biotic diversity in Ohio’s streams and rivers, and on the socioeconomic health of human communities.
